How it compares

The Otter.ai alternative that never uploads your audio

Otter is a capable cloud notetaker. If your blocker is the meeting bot, the subscription, or where your audio ends up, SummarizeRay is built for exactly that.

Why people switch from Otter.ai

A class action alleges recording and model training without consent

In August 2025 Otter was hit with a proposed class-action lawsuit alleging it recorded conversations and trained its AI on transcripts without adequate consent. The claims are unproven, but for calls under NDA the question 'where does the audio go, and who trains on it?' is the whole reason people switch. (NPR, Aug 2025)

The bot joins the call

Otter's Notetaker joins meetings as a visible participant. For client-facing calls that is awkward at best and, in some organizations, not allowed. SummarizeRay captures system audio locally — nothing joins the call.

It is a subscription

At ~$16.99/month for Business, Otter costs roughly $204 in the first year and keeps charging. SummarizeRay is $39 once; you pay your AI provider directly, typically a few cents per meeting.

When Otter.ai is the better choice

We'd rather you pick the right tool. Otter.ai is a better fit if:

  • You want a live, shared team workspace with real-time collaboration on notes.
  • You are mostly on mobile and need a polished iOS/Android app.
  • You prefer an all-in-one hosted service and don't want to manage your own AI key.

FAQ

Is SummarizeRay really free of a meeting bot?

Yes. It records system audio and your mic directly on your machine (ScreenCaptureKit on macOS, WASAPI on Windows). No participant joins the call, so there is nothing for other attendees to see.

Does my audio ever leave my computer?

No. Transcription runs locally with Whisper. Only the resulting transcript text is sent to the AI provider you choose, using your own API key. There is no SummarizeRay server your data could reach.

What does it actually cost per meeting?

The app is $39 once. Summaries use your own OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini key — typically $0.01–0.05 for a one-hour meeting, paid straight to the provider.
